‘Congratulations’ or Condolences?

Their album isn’t due out until April 13th, but since when does that stop the internet from getting it’s dirty little hands on anything? ‘Congratulations’ is certainly a little more experimental than their debut album, ‘Oracular Spectacular’. Is that a bad thing though? I think not. Let me put it like this:

If you’re the kind of listener who  has “Kids” or “Time to Pretend” as their most played songs in your library, then this album isn’t for you. This album is for the kind of person who appreciated “4th Dimensional Transition” or “Future Reflections”.

The album’s overall feel is 60’s surf music with a touch of a psychedelic feel. It’s definitely interesting to say the least. It’s not quite what I had expected but…then again, it should be of no surprise. In a recent interview with Spinner news, Ben Goldwasser addressed people’s responses to their single, “Flash Delirium”.

“I’m sure there are plenty of people who think it’s completely weird and not what they were expecting. I’m sorry.”

That quote can be directed towards the whole album pretty much. If you have an open mind and are the type of person that will give an album a few listens, then you will enjoy the duo’s Sophomore album. Check it out even if you are skeptical, new music is always great. Here are my top three favorite song’s off the album:

5. “I Found a Whistle” (3:40)

This song is perhaps the catchiest on the album and an all around “feel good” song. It’s a pretty mellow in the beginning of the album but builds its way up along the way and makes for an enjoyable sing-a-long.

7. “Brian Eno” (4:32)

The track is pretty quick in comparison to the majority of the album and contains a lot of rhyming as well. It honestly reminds me of a very dark version of the Beach Boy’s “Sloop John B” for some reason but I can’t put a finger on it as to why.

9. “Congratulations” (3:57)

The title track and also my overall favorite off the album has some similarities of “The Handshake” in regards to the acoustic-mellow spirit of it. The song also has some steel drum action going on. I didn’t think I’d ever like hearing steel drums after being beat in the face with it by those late night ‘Girls Gone Wild’ commercials. Thanks for changing my stance, MGMT. The song ends with a light applause and can be looked at as if the light applause is the size of audience that will like the album in comparison to ‘Oracular Spectacular’.
